The spine is the structural and neural axis of the body, the physical and functional lynch pin of all posture and movement. It is the most complex unit of our skeletalmuscular system, and the most challenging to manipulate--twenty five vertebrae with more than one hundred articulations, supported and moved by scores of muscles including some of the largest and some of the smallest in the body. Its structural integrity, alignment and freedom are essential to the healthy function of all our muscles, organs and senses.
Far more than any other creature, we individually evolve the shape and condition of our spines and their specific stresses on our journey from crawlers to upright walkers. Far more often than trauma, the postural and movement habits we have ingrained along the way are the source of much chronic and debilitating back pain. The spine is also the site of many slowly degenerating conditions typically associated with the aging process--collapsing curvatures, narrowing discs, osteoporosis, arthritis and the inevitable accumulation of stresses and pain. For these reasons, effective treatment of the spine can be one of the most dramatically beneficial parts of any bodywork session.
Please bring shorts and bra tops so that you can more easily be seen and contacted.
Students will deepen their skills in: --assessing clients histories and evaluating existing patterns in the spine --planning a session strategy that meets their specific needs --using the tools of their training more effectively --applying new tools to their practice --their own body mechanics at the table --reducing their stress and fatigue at the table |
